Creating Indigenous Futures

Here at Nungalinya we have been able to foster a Creating Indigenous Futures program with Evelyn Myatt as the Coordinator. The program facilitates the development of disengaged Indigenous youth between the ages of 14 to 19 years. Allowing Indigenous youth the opportunity to access education and training to improve their life choices.

It fosters the development of life skills, enhances personal development, prepares and assists them in the transition to work or further education and provides the knowledge and skills for living in our cross cultural environment.

The program aims to develop links with community organisations to provide additional support and guidance for youth in identifying and accessing alternative pathways.  Our aim on completion of the program is to ensure these young people have developed skills to improve their social, emotional, physical and spiritual well being.  With Nungalinya College providing the environment to allow disengaged Indigenous youth to access further education, training and employment.

The course offers practical activities designed at providing basic skills in land care management and textile arts.  We provide hands on landscaping, carpentry, nursery projects and textile projects exploring techniques from screen printing to tye dying. We also offer tutorial support for students enrolled with  Northern Territory Open Education Centre (NTOEC) undertaking year 11 and 12 studies. We will be looking at expanding these projects in 2008 into enterprise programs.
